Why Mexico Should Sign a Trade Treaty with the European Union
The purpose of this essay is to list some benefits a trade treaty with the European Union could bring for the Mexican economy. Certainly, open economies receive many more benefits than closed economies because they are open to the free market. The signing of this new treaty will result in economic, social, and even cultural benefits, so is important to know about it and the influence it could produce.

The North America Free Treaty Agreement (NAFTA) is the antecedent we know. The treaty signed with Canada, the United States, and Mexico was created in order to increase the commercial relationships among these three countries. Certainly; it is done. Although some persons belive that the results of NAFTA are mostly negative, we must consider the results. Currently, Mexico is the second commercial partner of the United States just behind Canada and occupies the first place in Latin America referring to exports. Last year Mexico exported merchandise for more than 150 million dollars to countries throughout the world.

Diversity is the second reason why Mexico should sign a trade treaty with the European Union.  Diversity is an important issue on which the Mexican economy should focus. It is important to export to other countries because more than 80% of Mexican exports are going to United States. Increasing the commerce with Europe is necessary to fortify and amplify the goals of the Mexican economy. Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Luxembourg, Holland, Portugal, Great Britain, and Sweden are the members of the European Union. The signing of a treaty with these countries will achieve the goal of diversification for Mexico.

The third reason why Mexico should sign a trade treaty with the European Union is to promote cultural and social opportunities. A trade treaty would also include cultural and technological interchange. The educational cooperation is important for Mexico as well; for example, a students interchange would be benefitial between Mexico and Europe. The cultural wealth of Europe is huge and very interesting. This treaty with Europe could increase the cultural interchange and also could provide intercultural skills for Mexican students.

Currently the Mexican government is negotiating this arrangement, and we should take advantage of this new negotiation. We should remember that unless we sign a trade agreement, we will be left out of the globalization game. It is true that countries with free markets are wealthier than countries in which the economy is not open.
