Giving Instructions Essay Written on the Last Day of Class by Mike

A Message to the Newcomers

Basically, in this brief message, I will tell you exactly what to do to get a good grade. I know this last sentence caught your attention because like all of us, we are, at first, only interested on the good grade. To succeed in this class you have to write a lot, read a lot, and turn in each assignment.

For you students that think this class is an easy 100, think again. For this grade to appear in your final paper you will have to write your way there. This is not a difficult task, but it requires effort to be able to write at any given time.

You will also have to read. By reading you not only prepare yourselves for the partial exams, but you have a strong reference on how experienced authors structure their essays. The more you read, the better you will learn how to write.

Most important of all, turn in your assignments! If you are constant and don't miss any due date, you will surely have good grades. Believe me, there will be lots of essays to write, so don't leave them to the final minute.

Finally, after already knowing the secret formula for your 100, writing, reading, and turning in assignments on time,  I would like to wish you all luck and leave you with my final message: The most important thing I gained from this English composition class was not the great grade, but the ability to write good essays and research papers in the English language.

A Topic Sentence is a
Topic plus a Controlling Idea

Before writing any essay or even a paragraph, it is important to think, first about the topic and then what you want to say about the topic.  Most often, the topic is easy, but the question then turns to what you want to say about the topic which is the controlling idea.  Topic sentences should always contain both (1) a topic and (2) a controlling idea.

The essay on the left contains the topic and controlling idea clearly marked.  In addition, each main point is marked as well, first in the introduction, second at the beginning of the second, third, and fourth paragraphs, and finally, in the conclusion.

In sum, the steps to getting a good grade are writing a lot, reading a lot, and turning in each assignment on time.
